Transient Evoked OAE (TEOAE)
Transient Evoked OAE (TEOAE) is a type of hearing test that uses brief click sounds to measure the inner ear’s (cochlea) response. Commonly used in newborn screening. Tests frequencies between 500 and 4,000 Hz. If no emissions are detected, it may indicate hearing loss or cochlear damage.
Distortion Product OAE (DPOAE)
Distortion Product OAE (DPOAE) is an advanced hearing test that uses two pure tones simultaneously to measure the inner ear’s responses. More specific and detailed results. Useful in older children and adults. If weak or no emissions are detected, it suggests hearing loss or cochlear dysfunction.
Our OAE Testing Procedure Explained
Preparation
No extra preparation is needed for the test. The patient is sitting quietly in a room that is not noisy. Patients should be in a calm place and be able to sit still during the test. Babies should be asleep or calmly resting during the test to avoid any disturbances.
Tests
A small, soft probe is put into the ear canal very carefully. Probes click or tone softly. When you hear something, the hair cells in your inner ear move, making tiny echoes. The microphone on the probe picks up these answers and sends information to a computer.
Result Analysis
Results indicate present or absent OAEs. The present OAEs show that the cochlear hair cells are working normally and the inner ear is healthy. The absent OAEs indicate the presence of earwax or fluid in the middle ear, hearing loss, or cochlear damage.
Recommendation
There is no treatment for present OAEs, but there is for the underlying cause of the absent OAEs. For earwax or fluid in the middle ear, we recommended ear cleaning or prescribed ear drops. Speech therapy and hearing aids are used for hearing loss treatment.
